* "McCarthy" is the most common "Mc" name in Ireland, I'm told, and if you're of that clan, it's easy to be a Kevin. So "Kevin McCarthy" is a kind of Irish "John Smith." This gets confusing. For example, an inebriated East Coaster once called in the wee hours, insisting I was his long lost buddy, "Mouse." So I eventually dropped the surname. But Patricia insisted I retrieve it, as it was the entire unwieldy package that intrigued her enough to keep our first date. (See Courageous Pulls Through.)

I've never cared for long names. The only ones that seem to work well are those in which at least one of the words is a single syllable, as in "Katherine Anne Porter" or "George Bernard Shaw." So I'm sorry for the jaw-breaking triple. It's just who I am. And it's much better than "Mouse."
